Hand towels for a busy household
Size, hanging space and a clean spare matter more than having a perfectly matched set beside every basin.

Start with the basin
A hand towel should be easy to reach after washing without dripping across the room. Check the distance between the basin and its hanging point, and whether the cloth will brush the floor, bin or wet counter. A compact towel that hangs freely can be more useful than a larger decorative one folded into several layers.
Look at the rail before selecting a size. Some rings gather the cloth into a narrow bunch; a wider bar allows more of it to open out. If you are buying a new fitting, check that the wall and fixing are suitable for its stated load. The towel needs a secure place even when someone pulls it off with wet hands.
Enough in rotation
Count how often the basin is used and how quickly a towel dries there. A guest bathroom used occasionally has a different rhythm from the basin shared by a whole family before school and work. Keep clean replacements within reach so changing a damp or soiled towel does not become a search through the bedroom cupboard.
Matching colours are optional. Different colours can help distinguish towels assigned to different people or different rooms. Choose a system everyone understands, rather than relying on a display arrangement that looks identical after each towel has been moved.
For a heavily used basin, a smaller towel that can be changed and washed conveniently may work better than a very thick one. The comparison should include its drying demands, not just how substantial it feels in the shop. Inspect the hems: they are handled repeatedly and should lie flat without loose threads catching on rings or fingers.
Keep decoration out of the way
Large tassels, stiff embroidery and ornamental borders may reduce the part of the towel people actually use. There is nothing wrong with a decorative towel, but it should not be the only usable cloth beside a busy basin. Set aside display pieces if they make the everyday routine awkward.
Wash according to the individual care label, especially when colours and trims differ. Put clean towels away fully dry and replace worn ones when their usable surface has become unpleasant or the edges are failing. Buying a few that fit the room and keeping them in circulation is more useful than a large untouched matching bundle.
